Hi - Laura here! If you’re reading this it probably means we've had a conversation about skin care, chronic health issues or plants. I'm looking to create something I wish I had; a community to help me navigate health issues where the western medical system wasn't piecing things together AND clean skin care that wouldn't aggravate inflamed and sensitive skin.
I'm starting my fourth month of an in-person community herbalism course here in Boulder, Colorado. I'm learning what I need to know to start creating skin care products using herbs and much much more.
The short of the long story…
In my late twenties, I was struggling with my health; in and out of urgent care, aching joints, and oh. so. tired. Years of pain management and searching for answers lead me to a Lyme Disease diagnosis. A few years after that, old symptoms flared along with some new ones and I was scared. The things I was doing before to manage Lyme weren't working. I met a holistic practitioner who discovered I was suffering from mold toxicity. One of the most emotional symptoms was a rash that wrapped around my eyes and mouth. It was painful. Even rubbing the sleep out of my eye in the morning would hurt. I couldn't go out without someone mentioning the rash; they knew someone, or maybe they themselves, had a rash like that at one point. Was it allergies? Was it eczema? I bought some silly glasses from the costume shop which helped to disguise the rash. If you'd like a see a photo of the rash, click here (warning: this is no ‘felt cute, might delete later’ selfie).
For as much as I hated having such a noticeable and painful face rash for so long, it made me realize how many people are struggling with skin issues. It's uncomfortable, and often visible, when things aren't right. Because of the rash, so many people shared a piece of their story with me and it lead me to signing up for an herbalism course. Herbal products and supplements were the only thing that cleared the rash and has kept it at bay.
One day, I hope to be able to offer clean skin care from just plants but I'm not there just yet. I'm a few steps into this journey and happy to be here!
